Yes, it is. An art performance is composed of several aspects that, taken individually or as a whole, allow a protection of rights. The protection can achieved through two legislative instruments: contracts and intellectual property. Contracts are signed by the parties involved: by the artist or the performer (they might differ), by the photographer or the videomaker and so on, while the rules on intellectual property (mainly copyright) grant the author the exclusive right to authorize any live reproductions of the same performance by other artists, to record and distribute it.

The copyright of an artwork, such as a painting, sculpture or performance lasts up to 70 years after the death of the author.
